The Waldorf-Astoria opened in 1883 and flourished both financially and socially. Its men's bar was the domain of Frick, Morgan, Guggenheim and other wealthy businessmen. In 1897, during one famous ball, 1,200 guests arrived dressed for the Versailles of Louis XV. Entire floors were redecorated to please certain guests.
